The Job

A Short film by Tatiana W Doroshenko

One Liner

Ruth gets her catharsis in her abandoned city.

Short Synopsis

During COVID lockdown in Melbourne, Ruth returns to a now abandoned office space to remember a traumatic experience and to reclaim the space for herself. She has her catharsis, but will she get busted?

THE JOB

This short was made on a small budget near the end of COVID lockdown in Melbourne Australia, allowing us to capture an authenticity in the abandoned spaces and exteriors. The imagery and story are inspired and informed by the experience of living in the CBD during this time.
It explores trauma memories as carved into spaces, mental and physical, and ideas around reclaiming these spaces that fester with the remnants of nasty stories, some from many years ago.

I worked with dance artists to express the psychological through the body with an aim to integrate dance into the screen drama in an organic way. I engaged Japanese-Australian Butoh artist Yumi Umiumare as choreographer, working with the lead actor Dana Miltins, known for her physical theatre work with The Rabble.
We were funded by a Melbourne City Council Quick Response Arts Grant and by many kind crowd funders and in-kind-ers, with Auspicious Arts managing finances. Post production sound involved sound engineering students at RMIT City campus.

World premiere at MIFF in my home town Melbourne.

Amissa Anima

June 8, 2021 by td-admin

Amissa Anima home page

Amissa Anima, which means ‘lost soul’ in latin, is a short film directed by Tatiana Doroshenko and written by David Markin. Produced by Katrina Mathers (Cherry Hands Media) and Bernie Clifford (Bernzerk Productions). Ellery Ryan was the DOP.

The story is about four boys surviving on the edge of existence in St Kilda in the early 1980’s. Their fragile balance is broken when an act of betrayal pushes them to retaliate. The characters are fictional, but the story is based on true crime events and the personal experiences of the writers who grew up on the streets of St Kilda during this time.

Earth is a psychological thriller / magic-realist piece that explores grief and guilt connected with wartime atrocities.

A loner paparazzi photographer, led on by a mysterious woman, unearths the dark secrets of his ancestors, secrets that refuse to remain buried.

Short Synopsis

A loner paparazzi photographer, lives in a classy apartment in the heart of a metropolis. When his estranged father dies unexpectedly, a mysterious and irresistible woman appears in his life, leading him to uncover the terrible secrets of his ancestors.

Director’s statement

Earth is a psychological thriller and magic realist short.  The story is an exploration as the effects of war trauma on successive generations. It charts the psychological journey of a man, who under the strain of grief, social isolation and estrangement from family and ethnicity, finds a path to emotional growth and spiritual insight.

The narrative was inspired by a story orally passed down in my family that has always haunted me.
